50-MFLOPS DSP Card Features PCMCIA Interface and Stereo Audio

Allentown, PA. November 15, 1995. Communication Automation & Control, Inc. announces the BULLETdsp, a portable, 50-MFLOPS Type 3 PCMCIA interface card that targets high-performance audio signal processing applications. Based on Texas Instruments' TMS320C32 floating point digital signal processor, the BULLETdsp features two stereo CD-quality audio input/output channels and provides up to 1 Mbyte of SRAM, 4 Mbytes of DRAM, and 512 kbytes of flash memory.

The BULLETdsp's TMS320C32 features a pair of 256 x 32-bit, single- cycle, dual-access RAM blocks, two memory-mapped 32-bit timers, an externally accessible serial port, a 64 x 32-bit program cache, and two DMA channels, which are used by the on-board CODEC.

The BULLETdsp's two audio I/O channels are based on Crystal Semiconductor's 16-bit, CS-4231 stereo multimedia CODEC, which provides line-in, line-out (headphones), and phantom powered mic-in channels. The CODEC's sigma-delta A/D input portion features 64x oversampling and linear phase, digital anti-aliasing filters. The D/A output portion features a sigma-delta modulator with 16-bit resolution and 8x interpolation filters that enable it to automatically track the sampling rate.

Both the host and DSP may control the CODEC's programmable sample rate (5.51 to 48 kHz), input gain (0 to 22.5 dB), and output attenuation (0 to -94.5 dB). The converter's linear (8- and 16-bit) A law, uLaw, and ADPCM formats are also software selectable.

A 15-pin receptacle accepts several CAC dongles for audio connections (3.5mm stereo jacks) and direct interfacing to the DSP's serial port. The BULLETdsp consumes a maximum of 1.82W at 5V and .26W in power-down mode.

Software development tools include Texas Instrument's TMS320C32 C Compiler Development System ($1500) and Assembler Development System ($500).

The BULLETdsp's base price of $895 includes 256 kbytes of SRAM and is available immediately. A Type 2 BULLETdsp board is expected in Q1 `96.
