============================================================================== EmPack API Version 3.5.8 Copyright(c) 1991-2008 Communication, Automation, and Control, Inc. All Rights Reserved ============================================================================== WARNING ============================================================================== It is very important that you follow the installation procedure given. Several changes have been made in both the embedded code and the device driver which makes this release incompatible with previous releases. The given procedure has been tested to ensure that your system is updated in an orderly manner. ============================================================================== INSTALLATION: ============================================================================== Note: Windows 2000 and later will start up the Harware Wizard when it detects Empacks for the first time or if additional Emapcks are added to the system. Leave the Hardware Wizard alone for now and follow the installation instructions, below. The installation procedure should be run while logged in as the Adminstrator user. 1. Close all EmPack applications. 2. If versions of EMAPI prior to 3.3.0 exist on the system, it is recommended you uninstall them. This is done by running Add/Remove Program in the Control Panel. If you do want to keep the old versions, make sure to specify a different installation target directory during the installation of the new software. 3. Run Setup.exe on the distribution media. 4. If you chose not to run the Flash Update program from the installer, or if it failed, update the EmPack flash after the software installation as follows: 1. Open a command window (Command prompt). 2. Run emflash all 5. Windows Server 2003, Windows XP and possibly recent service packs for Windows 2000 have tightened access permissions to some device interfaces. It may be necessary to fix device permissions to enable users without Administrator privileges to access the SCSI adapters to which the Empacks are attached. If you chose not to run the permission fixing program from the installer you may run it later as follows: 1. Open a command window (Command prompt). 2. Run emfixperm -a 6. If you have an EMPCI mezzanine, run empciflash all After the installer has completed, if you have not cancelled the Hardware Wizard that may have started on Windows 2000 or above you should complete the Hardware Wizard now. If the Hardware Wizard was cancelled it will appear again after rebooting or by going to Start / Settings / Control Panel / Add Hardware. A "Found New Hardware" window will appear 4 times for each Empack attached to the computer. For each one perform the following steps. The following describes the sequence for Windows Server 2003. Some details may differ on Windows 2000 which may complete the installation automatically. 1. In the "Found New Hardware" window select "Install the software automatically" then click "Next". 2. If a "Driver Installation Security Alert" window appears it is because the Empack is not a registered device with Microsoft. Click on "Yes" to continue. 3. Click on "Finish" in the Found New Hardare" window. ============================================================================== WHAT'S NEW in 3.5.8 ============================================================================== Updates in Release 3.5.8 that affect Windows systems include: - Support for Adaptec PCIexpress SCSI adapater (29320LPE) by means of limiting the size of individual SCSI transfers to 32 Kbytes instead of 64 Kbytes. Transfers larger than this max are (and have been) broken into chunks. For further information please see the release notes included on the distribution media or on the internet at http://www.cacdsp.com/software/release_notes/empack_hist.html. ============================================================================== KNOWN PROBLEMS ============================================================================== 1. The current version of EMAPI for Windows NT 4.0 relies on the ASPI driver and adapter miniport drivers. Recent versions of the ADAPTEC 2940 (and later models) SCSI adapters and miniport driver and tdo not support the channelization feature used in EMAPI. 2. When the Embedded code is changed to or from any version prior to 3.4.3 Windows 2000 will complain that the device has been unsafely removed the next time the Empack is accessed. It will then refuse to install or access the Empack for a few minutes. The best way to avoid this situation is to reboot Windows 2000 under these conditions. The emflash program included in release 3.4.3 and above attempts to determine when it is necessary to reboot and displays a notice. ============================================================================== PLEASE REGISTER ============================================================================== If you would like to be notified of future releases and upgrades for EmPack and other CAC products, please fill out the form at: http://www.cacdsp.com/register.html This registered list of email addresees will be used only for announcements of upgrades for CAC software.
